Some secrets never wash away…

Along the flat Essex coastline, deep in the heart of Southend-on-Sea, the body of a man is discovered in an allotment, half-naked and heavily mutilated.

The investigation quickly falls to DS Tomek Bowen of Essex Police who, thirty years before, found his dead brother in a similar location and manner one evening after school.

His brother’s murder had been random, a vicious and evil act that saw his killer face life imprisonment. But when the man's identity is uncovered, it becomes clear this was no random act. The victim had a sinister past that earned him many enemies. Enemies that have come to mete out their own form of justice.

But when a second victim appears, DS Bowen realises he’s on the trail of a serial offender – a vigilante killer who’s appointed themselves judge, jury and executioner.

As Tomek begins to peel back the dark and rotten layers of the victims’ lives, more and more secrets are revealed, along with a shocking revelation that will force Tomek to question everything he’s ever known about his brother’s death. But can he catch the killer before they strike again?

Death’s Justice is the unforgettable first book in the DS Tomek Bowen Essex Murder Mystery series by Jack Probyn. Filled with twists, peppered with romance and flavoured with ounces of dark humour, this fast-paced British detective novel will keep you guessing until the very end when the final shocking twist is revealed. Perfect for fans of JD Kirk, JM Dalgliesh, TG Reid, Simon McCleave and Rachel Mclean.

Note from the author

Thanks for your interest in the DS Tomek Bowen murder mystery series. I first started writing the series in the summer of 2023 and have been blown away by the response to it. As an Essex boy myself, I love being able to explore the area in which I grew up in a different light. I hope you enjoy the series as much I've enjoyed writing it.

Death's Justice

OK, this may be the first book in the series, but it became a bit of a 'page skipper' to me, rather than a 'page turner'.... it didn't grab me. I was put off quite early in the book by the gratuitous use of the words Cunt, Fuck and Fucking - there was absolutely no need for that language throughout the book, where other, more subtle language or description could have worked.

The use of place names centred around Southend-on-Sea did not enhance the story, and didn't make it a 'Southend' book - it could have been based on anywhere. More description about Southend could have been included.

Overall, I found the book a bit boring...

As I have already bought books 2 and 3 I'll give them a go..... hope they appeal more!!

A great start to the series.

A recently released predator waits at night for the seven-year-old girl he expects to arrive. Instead it is death that greets him in a very grisly manner and the case falls to Southend CID which includes DS Tomek Bowen, a good but flawed detective who still has nightmares about his lack of identification of his brother’s killer when he was a young boy. It’s not long before another ex-prisoner with a similar history of depraved crimes is found at his home, murdered in the same way. Most of the team feel these men got what they deserve, a view shared by the general public, but any murder has to be investigated and the idea that a vigilante is using a child to lure their victims is not a nice one in a case that touches everyone.
Along with the rest of the team, the rather complex character of Tomek slowly grew on me as the story progressed and we hear more about the events which have shaped his life as he juggles his dislike of his DI, his budding romance and this grim case with a twisty narrative and a shocking conclusion. By the end I really liked Tomek and his colleagues as they all proved their worth. A very good opening to a new series and I look forward to the next story.
